La Traviata
Courtesan's operatic demise
La Traviata is an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi, first performed in 1853.
The title means "the fallen woman" or "the wayward one," referring to its heroine, a Parisian courtesan who sacrifices love for social propriety.
It remains one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide: We saw La Traviata at the Met last season.
