Jane Grey
Briefest English queen
Jane Grey, also called Lady Jane Grey, was an English noblewoman who ruled as queen for nine days in 1553 before being deposed and later executed.
A great-granddaughter of Henry VII, she was placed on the throne by Protestant nobles hoping to prevent the Catholic Mary I from succeeding Edward VI.
Her brief reign makes her a symbol of political pawns and tragic youth—she was about sixteen when beheaded.
