Indian style

Legs crossed underneath

Indian style describes a way of sitting on the floor with legs crossed and feet tucked under the thighs—also called cross-legged or, more recently, criss-cross applesauce.

The term references a stereotyped image of how Native Americans sat.

The children sat Indian style on the carpet for story time.

The phrase has fallen out of favor as culturally insensitive.
