Human Genome Project
Gene sequencing initiative
The Human Genome Project was an international scientific effort, completed in 2003, to map and sequence all the genes in human DNA.
The project identified roughly 20,000 genes and established the order of the three billion chemical base pairs that make up human genetic information.
Its findings have shaped medical research, genetic testing, and understanding of hereditary disease.
