Harper's Ferry

Abolitionist raid location

Harper's Ferry is a town in West Virginia at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, known primarily as the site of John Brown's 1859 raid on a federal armory.

Brown's failed attempt to seize weapons and spark a slave uprising became a flashpoint before the Civil War.

The town changed hands repeatedly during the war and is now a national historical park.
