Gendarmerie

French military police

A gendarmerie is a military force with police duties, especially among civilians.

The term comes from French and typically refers to national police organizations in France and other countries that developed from or were modeled on the French system.

Unlike regular police, gendarmeries are part of the armed forces and often operate in rural areas or handle internal security matters: The gendarmerie patrol the countryside.
