metropolitan police
Urban law enforcement
Metropolitan police is a police force responsible for a major city and its surrounding urban area, as distinct from county, state, or national law enforcement.
The term is most associated with London's Metropolitan Police Service, often called "the Met," established in 1829 as the model for modern urban policing: The metropolitan police responded to the incident within minutes.
