French colony
Imperial possession abroad
A French colony is a territory under the political control and administration of France, typically overseas.
The term applies historically to France's extensive colonial empire across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific: Algeria was a French colony until 1962.
Some former French colonies retain close economic and cultural ties to France.
The phrase also describes communities of French expatriates abroad: a French colony in London.
