South Bronx
Hip-hop birthplace area
South Bronx refers to the southern portion of the Bronx, New York City's northernmost borough.
The area became synonymous with urban decay in the 1970s and 1980s—burned-out buildings, poverty, and crime made it a national symbol of inner-city blight.
It's also recognized as the birthplace of hip-hop culture.
Today the term still carries associations with both struggle and cultural innovation, though the neighborhood has undergone significant redevelopment.
