FMLA

Job-protected family leave

FMLA is the Family and Medical Leave Act, a U.S. federal law requiring covered employers to provide unpaid, job-protected leave for certain family and medical reasons—childbirth, adoption, serious illness, or caring for a family member.

Eligible employees can take up to twelve weeks annually: She's on FMLA leave after having the baby.

The law protects workers' positions but doesn't guarantee paid time off.
