Eric the Red
Eric the Red was a Norse explorer who founded the first European settlement in Greenland around 985 CE.
Exiled from Iceland for manslaughter, he sailed west and named the icy landmass "Greenland" to attract settlers—an early instance of promotional naming.
He was the father of Leif Erikson, who later reached North America.
