Emma Lazarus
Emma Lazarus was an American poet best remembered for "The New Colossus" (1883), the sonnet inscribed on the Statue of Liberty's pedestal.
Its lines—Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free—became synonymous with American immigration ideals.
Lazarus was also an early advocate for Jewish refugees and Zionism.
