East Harlem

Spanish Harlem's location

East Harlem is a neighborhood in the northeastern section of Manhattan, New York City, bounded roughly by 96th Street to the south and the Harlem River to the north and east.

Historically home to Italian immigrants, it became predominantly Puerto Rican by the mid-20th century, earning the nickname Spanish Harlem or El Barrio.

The area has long been associated with working-class Latino culture, though gentrification has altered its demographics in recent decades.
