Dumbarton
Clyde estuary settlement
Dumbarton is a town in western Scotland on the River Clyde, historically significant as the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Strathclyde.
Dumbarton Rock, a volcanic plug with a fortress atop it, dominates the town and has been fortified since at least the Iron Age.
The name derives from Scottish Gaelic meaning "fortress of the Britons."
