Coca

Prefix before Cola

Coca is a South American shrub whose leaves contain cocaine and other alkaloids.

Indigenous Andean peoples have chewed coca leaves for centuries as a mild stimulant and to combat altitude sickness.

The plant is also the source from which cocaine is extracted.

Coca-Cola originally contained coca leaf extract, though the modern formula uses decocainized leaves for flavoring.
