Chinese lantern

Festive paper light

A Chinese lantern is a collapsible paper lantern, traditionally red, with a candle or light inside—used for decoration and celebrations, especially in East Asian festivals.

The term also names a plant with papery orange husks resembling tiny lanterns that enclose a small fruit.

Sky lanterns—paper bags lifted by heated air from a flame—are sometimes called Chinese lanterns as well.
