COINTELPRO
Bureau's secret operations
COINTELPRO was a covert FBI program (1956–1971) that surveilled, infiltrated, and disrupted domestic political organizations deemed subversive.
Targets included civil rights groups, the Black Panthers, antiwar activists, and communist organizations.
Tactics ranged from wiretapping to sending anonymous letters designed to destroy marriages or provoke violence between rival groups.
The name is a portmanteau of "counterintelligence program." Its exposure led to congressional investigations and reforms limiting domestic surveillance.
