Buffet

Help yourself meal

Buffet names two different words.

One (stress on the second syllable) is a meal where dishes are laid out for guests to serve themselves, or the sideboard or counter holding such food: The hotel offers a breakfast buffet.

The other (stress on the first syllable) means to strike repeatedly or be struck by forces: Winds buffeted the small boat.

Waves, criticism, and fate all buffet.
