Black Americans

Descendants of slaves

Black Americans are people of African descent who are citizens or residents of the United States.

The term encompasses those whose ancestors were brought as enslaved people, as well as more recent immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean.

Black American is often interchangeable with African American, though some prefer one term over the other based on personal or political considerations.

Black Americans have shaped every aspect of American culture, from music to literature to civil rights.
