Bayeux

Norman conquest stitchery

Bayeux is a town in Normandy, France, best known for the Bayeux Tapestry—a medieval embroidered cloth depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066.

The town itself survived World War II largely intact and was among the first French towns liberated after D-Day: We stopped in Bayeux to see the tapestry.
