Battle of Lexington
First revolutionary gunfire
The Battle of Lexington was the first military engagement of the American Revolutionary War, fought on April 19, 1775, in Lexington, Massachusetts.
British troops en route to seize colonial weapons encountered local militiamen on the town green.
Someone fired—the famous "shot heard round the world"—and in the brief skirmish that followed, eight colonists died.
The British continued to Concord, where heavier fighting awaited.
