BCR-ABL

Philadelphia chromosome product

BCR-ABL is an abnormal fusion gene formed when parts of two chromosomes swap places, joining the BCR gene to the ABL gene.

This chromosomal rearrangement, called the Philadelphia chromosome, produces a protein that drives uncontrolled cell division.

BCR-ABL is the hallmark of chronic myeloid leukemia and some acute leukemias: The patient tested positive for BCR-ABL.

Testing for BCR-ABL guides diagnosis and monitors treatment response to targeted therapies like imatinib.
