colonial borders
Empire-drawn division lines
Colonial borders are boundaries drawn by imperial powers when dividing conquered or administered territories, often with little regard for existing ethnic, linguistic, or geographic realities.
The term usually refers to African and Middle Eastern borders established by European powers in the 19th and 20th centuries: Many of Africa's conflicts trace back to colonial borders that split ethnic groups or forced rivals together.
These boundaries frequently persisted after independence, creating lasting political tensions.
