Aaron Copland

Aaron Copland was an American composer (1900–1990) whose works helped define a distinctly American classical sound.

His ballets—*Appalachian Spring*, *Billy the Kid*, *Rodeo*—draw on folk melodies and open harmonies that evoke the American landscape.

Copland also composed film scores, symphonies, and the brassy *Fanfare for the Common Man*.
