London Symphony
Thames-side musical ensemble
A London Symphony is the second symphony by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, completed in 1913 and revised several times thereafter.
Despite its title, the work is not programmatic but evokes the atmosphere of the city through musical impressions—the chimes of Big Ben, street cries, the Thames at twilight.
The phrase sometimes refers more broadly to any of the twelve symphonies Joseph Haydn composed for London audiences in the 1790s.
