4D chess

Hyperspace strategic game

4D chess refers to strategy so complex it appears incomprehensible to ordinary observers—as if the player is operating in a dimension others can't perceive.

The term is almost always ironic, mocking someone (often a politician) whose seemingly erratic moves are defended as brilliant long-term planning: His supporters claim he's playing 4D chess, but I think he just made a mistake.

Regular chess happens on a two-dimensional board; adding dimensions suggests superhuman foresight.

The phrase emerged from internet culture in the 2010s.
