passing lanes
Left side highway
Passing lanes are highway lanes designated for overtaking slower traffic.
On two-lane roads, a passing lane temporarily adds a third lane allowing faster vehicles to get around those holding up traffic.
On multi-lane highways, the leftmost lane serves as the passing lane—drivers are expected to move right after overtaking.
Keep right except to pass.
The term also appears in basketball, where passing lanes are the paths between players through which a ball might travel—defenders try to anticipate and intercept passes by occupying these lanes.
