zona fasciculata
Middle adrenal layer
The zona fasciculata is the middle and largest layer of the adrenal cortex, the outer portion of the adrenal gland.
It produces glucocorticoids, primarily cortisol, which regulate metabolism, immune response, and stress reactions.
The name describes its appearance—cells arranged in parallel columns or bundles (fascicles) running perpendicular to the gland's surface.
