zona glomerulosa
Outer adrenal layer
The zona glomerulosa is the outermost layer of the adrenal cortex, the outer portion of the adrenal glands that sit atop the kidneys.
This thin region produces aldosterone, a hormone that regulates sodium and potassium balance in the blood, thereby controlling blood pressure and fluid volume.
The name refers to the clustered, ball-like arrangement of its cells.
