word-blindness
Cannot decode text
Word-blindness is an older term for the inability to recognize or comprehend written words despite normal vision and intelligence.
The condition is now usually called dyslexia or alexia, depending on whether it's developmental or acquired through brain injury.
The doctor diagnosed his reading difficulties as word-blindness.
