snow flea

Cold-weather tiny jumper

A snow flea is a tiny dark springtail that appears on snow surfaces in winter, congregating in such numbers that patches of snow look peppered with black specks.

Despite the name, snow fleas aren't true fleas—they don't bite or infest animals.

They're harmless decomposers that feed on decaying organic matter and become visible against white snow when they emerge on mild winter days.
