western states
Beyond the Rockies
The western states are those in the western portion of a country, especially the United States.
In American usage, this typically includes the Pacific Coast states, the Mountain states, and sometimes the Southwest: Water rights have always been contentious in the western states.
The exact boundaries vary by context—the Census Bureau, politicians, and ordinary speakers may draw different lines.
