webworm

Tree tent caterpillar

A webworm is a caterpillar that spins large silken webs on trees and shrubs, feeding communally on enclosed foliage.

The fall webworm creates conspicuous tent-like structures at branch tips in late summer: The webworms have taken over the walnut tree again.

Several moth species produce webworms, which can defoliate ornamental and fruit trees.
