waybread
Common lawn weed
Waybread is an old English name for plantain—the common roadside weed with broad leaves and slender flower spikes, not the banana-like fruit.
The name reflects where the plant grows: along paths and traveled ways.
In Tolkien's *Lord of the Rings*, waybread refers to lembas, the elves' nourishing travel bread.
