water divining

Finding underground springs

Water divining is the practice of locating underground water using a forked stick, bent rods, or pendulum—supposedly guided by subtle movements when passing over a water source.

Also called dowsing.

Despite widespread folk belief in its effectiveness, controlled studies show diviners perform no better than chance.

The well was dug where the water diviner indicated.
