warrantless search

Cop's impulsive rummaging

A warrantless search is a search conducted by law enforcement without first obtaining a judicial warrant.

The Fourth Amendment generally requires warrants, but exceptions exist: consent searches, searches incident to arrest, vehicle searches with probable cause, and exigent circumstances like pursuing a fleeing suspect.

The evidence was thrown out because police conducted a warrantless search without any recognized exception.
