warp zone
Hidden game passage
A warp zone is a hidden shortcut in a video game that transports the player past multiple levels, skipping large portions of gameplay.
The term originates from the 1985 game Super Mario Bros., where secret passages allowed players to jump ahead several worlds.
The concept has since become a gaming staple: I found a warp zone and skipped straight to world eight.
Figuratively, anything that lets you bypass normal progression: That networking event was a warp zone for my career.
