warfighters

Armed forces members

Warfighters are military personnel engaged in combat operations—soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who actually fight.

The term emerged from Pentagon jargon in the late twentieth century as a way to distinguish those in combat roles from support staff: The new equipment was designed with warfighters in mind.

It carries a certain bureaucratic formality, appearing more often in policy documents and defense contractor pitches than in casual speech.
