vomitories
Crowd dispersal tunnels
Vomitories are passages in amphitheaters and stadiums that allow crowds to exit rapidly—the architecture "spews" people out.
The word comes from a Latin term meaning to discharge, not from actual vomiting.
In Roman arenas, vomitories enabled thousands of spectators to empty the venue in minutes.
Modern stadiums retain both the design and the term.
