volutes
Spiral column decorations
Volutes are spiral or scroll-shaped ornaments, most commonly the curved scrolls at the top of Ionic and Corinthian columns in classical architecture.
The term extends to any spiral or coiled form: the volutes of a seashell, smoke rising in volutes.
The singular volute describes one such scroll or spiral.
