virginals

Small plucked keyboard

Virginals is a keyboard instrument from the harpsichord family, popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, with strings running parallel to the keyboard rather than perpendicular.

The name's origin is uncertain—possibly from its association with young women or the Latin *virga* (rod).

Despite the plural form, virginals typically refers to a single instrument: She practiced her virginals each morning.

The diminutive size made it suitable for domestic music-making.
