vendettas

Prolonged revenge campaigns

Vendettas is the plural of vendetta, a prolonged feud marked by bitter hostility and acts of retaliation.

The word originally described blood feuds between families, especially in Italian and Corsican cultures, where avenging a relative's death was a matter of honor.

Now it applies to any sustained campaign of revenge or persecution: He carried on a personal vendetta against the newspaper that had criticized him.

Political vendettas consumed the administration.
