vanity press
Pay-to-print outfit
A vanity press is a publishing company that charges authors to print their books, rather than paying authors for manuscripts.
The author bears the financial risk and receives copies to sell or distribute.
The term is usually disparaging, implying the author couldn't find a traditional publisher: He finally resorted to a vanity press.
Also called vanity publisher.
