ur-text

Original foundational document

An ur-text is the earliest or original version of a text, from which later versions derive.

The German prefix ur- means original or primitive, and appears in a few English borrowings to convey the idea of something foundational or prototypical.

Scholars use ur-text when discussing manuscript traditions or attempting to reconstruct what an author originally wrote before subsequent editing or corruption.

Researchers sought the ur-text of the medieval epic, piecing together fragments from various manuscripts.
