upstrokes

Penmanship's ascending movements

Upstrokes are strokes made in an upward direction.

In handwriting and calligraphy, an upstroke moves from bottom to top, typically producing a thinner line than a downstroke: The letter m begins with an upstroke.

In music, an upstroke is a bow movement or pick motion moving upward.

Swimmers and rowers also distinguish upstrokes from downstrokes in their technique.
