underlever

Rifle's cocking handle

An underlever is a lever positioned beneath a mechanism, typically used to cock or operate it.

The term appears most often in firearms, where an underlever action uses a lever below the barrel or receiver to open the breech and chamber rounds: an underlever air rifle.

The design keeps the operating mechanism out of the sight line.
