underground railways
Subterranean mass transit
Underground railways are train systems that run through tunnels beneath city streets.
The term is primarily British; Americans say subway.
London's Underground, opened in 1863, was the first.
The phrase can also refer to secret networks for moving people clandestinely, as in the historical Underground Railroad that helped enslaved people escape to freedom.
