underexpose

Deny sufficient light

To underexpose is to expose photographic film or a digital sensor to insufficient light, resulting in an image that's too dark.

The term applies to both the technical error and the deliberate choice: The shadows are muddy because I underexposed by two stops.

Figuratively, underexposed can mean insufficiently publicized or promoted: an underexposed artist who deserves wider recognition.
