underexposing

Too little light

Underexposing is allowing too little light to reach film or a digital sensor when taking a photograph.

The result is an image that's darker than intended, with lost detail in shadows.

Photographers sometimes underexpose deliberately for dramatic effect or to preserve highlights: I was underexposing by a stop to keep the sky from blowing out.
