uncanny valley
Almost-human revulsion zone
The uncanny valley is the unsettling feeling people experience when encountering robots, animations, or other artificial representations that look almost but not quite human.
The term describes a dip in comfort level: a cartoon character or obviously robotic figure may seem appealing, but as the likeness approaches true human appearance without quite achieving it, viewers often feel revulsion or unease.
The CGI characters fell into the uncanny valley—their eyes looked dead.
The concept originated in robotics but now applies broadly to digital animation and AI-generated faces.
